Service user involvement

At the North London NHS Foundation Trust, involving service users and carers in quality improvement projects is a priority for us and we have had several projects to date with service user and/or carer involvement including our Patient Flow Big Rooms.

There is a shared ambition across the Trust to strengthen the voice of service users and carers and we have recently developed a Service User and Carer Experience and Involvement Strategy and implementation plan. In addition to involvement in QI projects, the Trust is focused on involving service users and carers in a meaningful way in the planning, delivery and organisation of services.

As service users and/or carers have direct experience of using services, they have a unique insight into what works, which is vital in helping to identify how services can improve. This can be strengthened through coproduction with project teams in delivering quality improvement projects.

We continue to create opportunities for service users and carers to be involved in quality improvement projects across the organisation. Whether you are a staff member or a service user and/or carer and would like to know more about how to get involved please contact nlft.qi@nhs.net

Why do we involve service users and carers in improvement work?

1.We want to continue to build on the existing work and to see increase in service user & carer involvement in quality improvement projects.

2. It is paramount that service users and carers are involved in quality improvement work because they are the recipient of the care and services we offer.

3. Staff can learn from their experience, understand what really matters and what would make a positive difference in the services provided.

4. Service users and carers have other professional, educational and unique backgrounds with skills to add in addition to their lived experience.

How can service users and carers be involved in QI projects?

Service users & carers can be involved in QI projects through Big I or Little I:

Big I involvement: Service users are involved directly and act as a full member of the QI project team - share decisions and responsibility of QI development and delivery. It is full and continuous partnership.

Little I involvement: Service users are involved and consulted regularly during the lifetime of the project. Asking people who use the service for ideas, what needs improving, and if they have noticed improvements. This could be through focus groups, feedback surveys and/or questionnaires. It is a periodic partnership.

Reward and recognition for service users’ involvement

All service users and carers involved in a QI project will receive payments for their time and contribution with the project team.
